Establish a Designated Bike Lane on 28th Street

The Issue

In November, my husband and I, who often travel through our local neighborhood by bike and scooter, faced a tragic event. I was struck by a car while crossing 28th Street. Despite the "share the road" principle, many drivers fail to watch for cyclists, scooter riders, and pedestrians.

Recently, after returning to the road, we’ve encountered additional dangers: cars ignoring stop signs, turning without checking, and performing illegal K-turns and U-turns, often narrowly missing us.

Over the past few years, riding on 28th Street has become increasingly hazardous for us and for pedestrians alike. When we have confronted drivers at intersections to urge greater caution, their reactions are often aggressive, even when they are clearly at fault. The level of road rage in this city has reached alarming levels, leaving us feeling extremely unsafe as pedestrians.

It is clear that relying on drivers to "share the road" is ineffective to ensure the safety of pedestrians on alternative modes of transportation.

I urge the city to (1) create a designated bike lane on 28th Street. A clear, separate space for cyclists/scooters/etc. Although this street is already considered a "bike route", there is a need for markings on the road.

This can help mitigate accidents and raise awareness of pedestrians sharing the road. As well as (2) to install a protected turn signal at the cross street of Indian School and 28th St, by making a turning lane only. Even driving in a car, you take your life in your hands when turning at this intersection. The well-being of our community and the preservation of our beloved pastime demand immediate action. All pedestrians on alternative modes of transportation, whether commuting or for leisure, have the right to feel secure on the streets.

Please sign and share this petition and help ensure that there's greater safety for alternative modes of transportation on our roads.
