Establish a dedicated dog park in Old Greenbelt

The Issue

There is a large segment of the people living in Old Greenbelt who are dog owners.  Many have expressed the need for a dedicated dog park within walking distance from our homes.

A dog park provides a safe, dedicated off-leash space for our companion animals to roam free and make new friends.

Throughout the years, Greenbelt residents have on several occasions appealed to the Greenbelt City Council for a dedicated dog park in this part of town, but those appeals have never come to fruition.

It's time to revisit this request.

Multiple studies show the benefits of dog parks. It's not just about the dogs, but the owners too! A dog park within walking distance will:

  • Offer a chance to meet like-minded neighbors
  • Help to ease the social isolation experienced since the COVID-19 epidemic
  • Enhance the quality of life for both the dogs and their owners
  • Increase exercise for dogs and lead to better canine health, both physical and mental
  • Allow our canine companions to play off leash and socialize  particularly those who have been adopted from rescue organizations and shelters.

A dedicated dog park could also be used to provide and promote dog training classes. A trained dog is a good neighbor and a positive citizen in  our community.

We are not requesting a gigantic project, just a fenced off, safe space for our pets to play freely.  Let's agree to identify the best site for a dog park in Old Greenbelt and work with the City of Greenbelt to make it happen..

If you agree with this appeal, show your support by signing this petition. We will present the petition to the Greenbelt City Council. Your signature counts towards making our community a better place for our dogs.
