Establish a Dedicated Dog Park for Emotional Support and Service Dogs on Campus

Establish a Dedicated Dog Park for Emotional Support and Service Dogs on Campus
The Issue
I am a student at Grand Canyon University with a service dog who has high-energy levels. Walking him is simply not enough; he needs space to play freely, and socialize with other dogs. It's not just about my dog, though. There are many emotional support dogs and/or service dogs on our campus that require more than just walks for their health and well-being.
It is scientifically proven that regular playtime in an open space can significantly improve the physical health and mental well-being of dogs (American Kennel Club). Moreover, social interaction among dogs can help them develop better behavior patterns (Journal of Veterinary Behavior). Despite these facts, our campus lacks a dedicated safe space where these invaluable companions can play freely.
I’ve spoken to SDS (student disability services) about this issue and they simply said “GCU doesn’t want to promote students to think they can just bring their dog to campus.” This is valid, however there are many solutions for this argument. Such as certain restrictions and regulations can be put in place for this park. It could also be a specifically called “ESA/Service Dog Park” instead of just “Dog park”
There is a whole area for stray cats who live on campus, but no where for my dog to be able to play. He is a trained service dog, but it’s a hard adjustment going from 5 acres of open yard to a small apartment with nowhere to be let off-leash.
Therefore, several of us on campus with ESA/Support Dogs are calling upon the administration to establish a dedicated dog park on campus specifically for emotional support dogs and service dogs. This will not only enhance their quality of life, but also contribute positively to the overall environment on campus.
We believe that this initiative will be beneficial for both the students who rely heavily on these animals for emotional support or assistance, as well as the general student population who will enjoy seeing happy, healthy pets around them.
Please sign this petition if you agree that our emotional support and service animals deserve their own safe space to frolic freely!
