The Issue

As passionate professionals who have regarded the Biophysical Society (BPS) as our central hub for pioneering muscle research and collaborations, we find the recent decline in muscle-focused presentations and discussions alarming.

The BPS has long been a sanctuary for us, the community of scientists studying cardiac and skeletal muscle. Here, we foster new collaborations, mentor our trainees, and engage with seasoned colleagues to present our innovative muscle research. However, recent years have seen a noticeable dip in muscle-themed talks and presentations - a concerning trend that emphasizes the need for a specific platform within the society.

To revitalise our community and reaffirm our commitment to muscle research, we propose the creation of a dedicated Cardiac and Skeletal Muscle Research Subgroup within the BPS. The establishment of this subgroup is not simply about maintaining tradition, but of recognizing the critical importance of muscle research in our evolving understanding of human health.

Muscle diseases affect millions globally, with cardiac and skeletal muscle conditions like cardiomyopathy, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and myasthenia gravis being among the most debilitating, according to the World Health Organization. The creation of a dedicated Subgroup within the BPS will ensure that cutting edge research in these areas is not only nurtured but thrives.

Help us advocate for this much-needed addition to the Biophysical Society. Sign this petition to support the establishment of a Cardiac and Skeletal Muscle Research Subgroup and join us in reigniting fervor for muscle research within our beloved community.
