My sister, a victim of domestic abuse, tragically took her own life in December. She left behind two children and two grandchildren. Our lives have been irrevocably changed by this tragedy, and we don't want anyone else to experience the pain we have endured. One of the biggest challenges my sister faced was the lack of communication between agencies that could have intervened to save her life. The police are currently under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to their failings in handling her case.
We believe that creating a comprehensive database of victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse could prevent such tragedies from happening again. This database should be accessible by all agencies dealing with victims of domestic abuse - from law enforcement to social services - allowing them to share vital information efficiently.
According to Women's Aid Federation England, one woman is killed every three days due to domestic violence in England and Wales alone (Office for National Statistics). This alarming statistic underscores the urgency for better coordination among agencies dealing with domestic abuse cases. Mankind reported that In 2021/22, 18 men died at the hands of their partner or ex-partner compared to 60 women. For men, it is the highest figure since 2008/09 and doubles that from 2019/20. It is one man every three weeks.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for an improved system that can potentially save lives through better communication and data sharing among relevant agencies. Let's ensure no more families suffer as ours has done. Please sign this petition today. The link is below https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/656946
