Establish a 250:1 Student to School Counselor Ratio Nationwide

The Issue

Across the United States, our educational institutions shoulder the dual responsibility of academic enrichment and emotional nurturing. However, many schools fall short in providing adequate counseling support to students. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) recommends a student-to-school counselor ratio of 250 to 1, but this guideline is seldom met. It's not uncommon for a single counselor to manage the needs of 500 students or more, resulting in less personalized care and attention (American Psychological Association, 2020). Having a proper 250:1 ratio ensures each student receives the necessary time, guidance, and care to succeed, which in turn positively impacts their mental health and academic performance. We urge educational policymakers to legislate for a stricter adherence to the recommended 250:1 ratio, and increase funding to schools to enable them to meet this crucial criteria. Please sign this petition to advocate for better access to school counseling services, making a substantial difference in students' lives.
