Better access for Waltham Abbey Recycling Centre

The Issue

Introduce permits to allow domestic waste in small vans and trailers at Waltham Abbey Recycling Centre

Waltham Abbey's recycling centre ceased accepting vans and trailers from October 2016. Although this was intended to reduce commercial use of our domestic facilities it has had an impact on domestic users too. People who use vans and trailers for domestic waste and recycling now have to go to Harlow, which increases traffic on our roads and associated pollution, in addition to being inconvenient for tax payers.

One solution could be to introduce a van and trailer permit scheme, such as the one in Harlow, or downloadable Household Waste Declaration Forms, such as those available on the Southend District Council website.

By allowing registered domestic users to bring domestic waste in vans and on trailers Essex County Council could alleviate the additional pressure on our roads, related pollution and inconvenience for Waltham Abbey’s residents. It could potentially reduce fly-tipping too.

This is a well-established idea, with similar schemes in place in cities and counties across the country, including:

  • Bradford
  • Bristol
  • Buckinghamshire
  • Cornwall
  • Cumbria
  • Dorset
  • Durham
  • Hampshire
  • Hertfordshire
  • Hull
  • Leicestershire
  • Newcastle
  • Notttinghamshire
  • Oxfordshire
  • Swansea
  • Wiltshire
  • Worcestershire
