Cancel the Warrior Cats movie
The Issue
In 2016, David Heyman - a producer involved in the Harry Potter movies - reportedly signed with Chinese film company Alibaba Pictures to make a movie based on the beloved Warriors book series by Erin Hunter. This movie would most likely involve realistic CGI animation, much like Disney's 2019 remake of The Lion King.
Not much has been heard about the movie's production since then, but we are urging the Erin Hunter team and David Heyman to reconsider going forward with making this film, for a number of important reasons.
- First of all, the Warriors series is a long-running fantasy universe that has been around since 2003; at the time of writing this, there are over eighty books in the series, with more in the process of being written. The stories themselves take place over numerous decades; the books span several timelines and multiple generations of characters. There is no way that a film, or even a film series, could do justice to this rich fictional universe and its hundreds of characters. Any attempt to do so would only feel stilted and incomplete.
- Second, as stated above, the Warriors series has been around since 2003. Kids have grown up with these books and characters, and the series has been a cultural phenomenon on the internet for literally decades. Not having a movie or television show based on Warriors has forced fans to get creative - a quick search on YouTube will show hundreds of AMVs (animated music videos) and animated fan adaptations of the books. Many people in this fanbase, consisting primarily of young people, have LEARNED HOW TO ANIMATE in order to bring the world of Warriors to life. Many fans who got their start dabbling in Warrior cats fan animations are now professional animators working in the television industry today. Don't limit future fans' creativity by making a movie that will imagine this fantasy world for us. Let us keep using our imaginations and learning new skills and art forms!
The Warriors series by Erin Hunter is something truly special. It is a thoroughly unique fantasy universe that is deeply beloved by its many fans, and it deserves to stay that way. Not every piece of media lends itself well to a film adaptation, and Warrior cats is wonderful as it is. Please urge David Heyman and the Erin Hunter team to leave well enough alone and scrap the Warriors movie!
