Save Niles Post Office

Save Niles Post Office

The Issue

The proposed post office closures raise issues of poor planning and bias. In the Bay Area the majority of cuts would impact communities with larger minority populations, lower incomes, and more Democratic voters than respective counties.  Whiter, wealthier communities are less affected or not at all.

Fremont's 5 post offices each currently serve 47,905 people, which will go to 75,841 if cut to 3 post offices. There are only 3 adjacent community post offices within a 5-mile radius.

Burlingame, with no slated closures, has roughly the same median income level and 3 post offices that each serve only 10,247 people. There are 7 other post offices in communities within a 5-mile radius.

Menlo Park, again with no slated closures, has the same median income with 1 post office serving 39,945 people and 12 other post offices within a 5-mile radius.

There is clear bias in the selection process and the law that specifically governs how and where Post Offices are maintained states, “The Postal Service shall provide a maximum degree of effective and regular postal services to rural areas, communities, and small towns where post offices are not self-sustaining. No small post office shall be closed solely for operating at a deficit, it being the specific intent of the Congress that effective postal services be insured to residents of both urban and rural communities” (39 U.S.C. 101(b)).
