On July 8th, 2010 a Los Angeles based jury found a former BART Police Officer guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Oscar Grant, the unarmed, young Black man shot early on New Year’s Day 2008. The Department of Justice announced that it would launch an independent review of the Johannes Mehserle case in order to determine whether or not the shooting merits federal prosecution, according the department.
When State courts fall short in providing true justice, it is the duty of the Federal Government to intervene on our behalf. Join us in calling on Eric Holder and US District Attorney for Northern CA, Joseph P. Russoniello, to swiftly conduct their investigation into the death of Oscar Grant and to prosecute not only Johannes Mehserle, but former BART Officers Tony Pirone and Jon Woffinden for their actions in this tragic incident.
When State courts fall short in providing real justice, it is the duty of the Federal Government to intervene on behalf of communities, regardless of race, class, geography, or background. We look to the Department of Justice to act quickly and decisively to ensure justice for Oscar Grant.
