It has come to my attention that Erie County Scanner is Petitioning Commissioner of Erie County to “Criminally Charge Heroin Addicts When They OD and EMS is Required”.

I am a recovering heroin addict. But this is not about me. It’s about all of us. We can NOT continue punishing people for being sick. Addiction is a disease. To quote the National Institute On Drug Abuse; “Many people don't understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. They may mistakenly think that those who use drugs lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop their drug use simply by choosing to. In reality, drug addiction is a complex disease, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions or a strong will. Drugs change the brain in ways that make quitting hard, even for those who want to. Fortunately, researchers know more than ever about how drugs affect the brain and have found treatments that can help people recover from drug addiction and lead productive lives”.Please refer to this link to learn more about the science behind the disease of addiction.

Four years ago the love of my life, fiancé and best friend, Jamie Hart, fatally overdosed on heroin and prescription pills. We had both been clean for a while, about 8 months. I was attending Saint Charles Community College for the first time. Jamie was running his business. We owned a beautiful home in Town & Country, and he had just proposed to me weeks prior. All of my blessings were due to him and life was beautiful... Life was too good to be true.

We relapsed on prescription pain killers and within days our world came crashing down.

The next morning I woke up to my best friend and partner cold, blue and gone. For just a moment I thought maybe it was a nightmare, but quickly I realized it was not as I slapped him and tried to wake him. When I realized he was dead I tried to run for the phone when I fell to my knees. I couldn’t walk. The shock had caused me to lose control of my knees. So I crawled to the phone and called the police.

When they got there they told me he had been dead for hours. I was mortified. How could this all happen so quickly in 3 days time? My point is that this can happen to anyone and more than likely everyone of you that read this have either experienced addiction first hand or have close family or friends who have been affected by it. You may not know that they are suffering from an addiction, but they are.

That is like 21, 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The petition in Ohio to charge addicts that overdose has almost reached its goal. I want to show that we who love are stronger than those who fear and hate. Let’s come together and get signatures to apropiate funding for addicts that overdose to receive quality treatment. As I quoted above, according to the National Institute On Drug Abuse, “people recover from drug addiction and lead productive lives”. Let’s help encourage that recovery now! I’m tired of people dying!

“When at the end of the road we find that we can no longer function as a human being, either with or without drugs, we all face the same dilemma. What is there left to do? There seems to be this alternative: either go on as best we can to the bitter ends—jails, institutions or death—or find a new way to live”. Let’s help addicts find a new way to live!

To be specific I am petitioning Eric Greitens to create a program that helps addicts that overdose on heroin receive treatment immediately after being in the hospital. I know there are a couple programs in place already but it is not working. We need more. Our family members are dying! Please, Eric Greitens, help us!
