Time to give more than just spare change!
The Issue
It’s no surprise that Los Angeles is having a homelessness problem. Right outside the comforts of your home, there are homeless. And no, not just outside your house, but everywhere throughout Los Angeles. Homelessness has become such a crisis that it’s not entirely safe to pass by an open tent, RV, man-made shelters, etc. A poll was conducted from the Hart Research Institute, and 72% voters (via from the 901 Registered Voters), believe that homelessness is the #1 problem in Los Angeles. Additionally, when it comes to the problems that are to blame for the rise in homelessness, most voted that there’s a lack of mental health and social services. A student who participated in a poll, said, “It’s all over L.A.,” -“You can be in a good neighborhood, and it could be right around the corner. You can’t escape it.”
Fixing or at least maintaining this problem won’t happen overnight, that’s why I propose we should at least suppress this chaotic, post-apocalyptic problem we have here in Los Angeles. We shouldn’t have to worry about being stabbed, beaten, or dirtied with unknown substances thrown at us by homeless people while trying to get milk from the grocery store, for our bowl of cereal. For example, on November 12, 2019, a homeless man threw a steamy hot pile of diarrhea over woman named Heidi Van Tassel, out of the blue. This woman now has to be tested every three months to avoid residual diseases that the feces may have had. Ultimately, it left her with mental scarring. The man who threw the feces at the woman, suffered from schizophrenia and psychiatric disorders.
What we’re doing now is creating (or already having) programs to rehabilitate the homeless with mental health and social services. The problem is, is that it’s just not enough of what we have now. I feel and believe we need more rehabilitation centers for the homeless to get them off the streets and back into reality with a fresh start. Of course yes, it’s not exactly what you call a defining answer but it will further our goal to have less homeless people on the streets as much as possible.
