Stop the tormenting of our veterans and animals and enforce the law on illegal fireworks!
The Issue
In the Silverlake/Los Feliz/Echo Park neighborhoods of Los Angeles, illegal fireworks are constantly going off, and our veterans and animals suffer for months on end because of it. On this past Memorial Day, there have been fireworks exploding constantly from early afternoon all the way beyond midnight, and this is just the beginning of the fireworks season. We're asking for this law to be better enforced, and for those purchasing and setting off illegal fireworks to be warned, fined, and/or jailed.
Animal shelters get overloaded every summer with dogs who've run away in fear from the noise. Animals spend their nights shaking in fear and/or being put on medication to calm them down, which doesn't always work and has its own risks. Since it is illegal, there is no reason animal owners should have to helplessly watch their pets suffer for an entire summer.
Not only does it torment animals, veterans, and anyone else who is sensitive to the bomb-like sounds, but it also puts people and property at risk. According to mysafela.org, fireworks kill on average 40 people a year, and more than 3,000 are hospitalized. An annual average of 1,300 homes, and 300 vehicles burn a year as a result of fireworks. Let's enforce the law better and leave the fireworks to the professionals, and stop the senseless suffering created by fireworks.
