Stop Contracting Xerox To Run The Los Angeles Parking Violations Bureau

The Issue

For years now, the City of Los Angeles has been outsourcing the collection and enforcement of parking tickets to Xerox Corporation.  Together, they make over 150 million dollars in ticket revenue a year that does not directly improve the ease and accessibility of parking in Los Angeles.

In other words, Xerox is a collection's agency - not only enforcing the parking restrictions, but inventing them.  Futhermore, Xerox plays the judge, jury, and executioner in the appeals process for these tickets - meaning - it is near impossible to get out of a ticket (even with significant evidence).  With Xerox's help, the City of Los Angeles has instituted an unfair, unwarranted, and unwanted tax on the people of Los Angeles.  This tax hurts not only the citizens, but the small businesses - most of whom lose patrons on a daily basis due to customers unable to find accessible parking.  Futhermore, their policies violate the vehicle code.  In fact, a state judge recently ruled their practices to be illegal.

The fines, increasing almost every year, have grown to an amount that is more than a day's wages for a minimum wage employee.

Word around town is that the Mayor and elected officials of the City of Los Angeles are once again trying to rush through a contract with Xerox Corporation that would all but cement their oppressive practices into our daily lives.

Tell the Mayor to stop the madness and break ties with Xerox once and for all.  We the people of Los Angeles have had enough.  Sign this petition and email/tweet/facebook the Mayor.  We are the majority and we did not authorize this complete abuse of power.
