The words "kill shelter" are a paradox which blinds many of us to the horrors of animal shelters. The definition of shelter is "a protection or shield from something harmful." How can a place where dogs are being put to death for simply existing be "a shelter?" There are countless dogs in the Los Angeles area who have been put into shelters one way or another, whether it be abandonment, an owner's death, or just being lost. Thankfully, many rescue shops in the Los Angeles County save dogs from kill shelters both in and out of the Los Angeles County and take care of them until they find their forever home. However, LA mayor Eric Garcetti has created a new ordinance which bans LA-county rescue pet shops from saving death row dogs from non-LA kill shelters. They even went so far as to go into one Los Angeles County rescue shop and take 17 safe, healthy, innocent dogs back to Los Angeles city kill shelters where they will live as prisoners until they are put to death, all because they were from outside the Los Angeles County. These non-Los Angeles County dogs are being put into overcrowded kill shelters. Dogs are man's best friend, so why are they being treated like this?
