Expand and improve NYC bike infrastructure NOW
Every day, thousands of New Yorkers bike our city's treacherous streets, risking serious injury or death. In 2019, NYC had the highest number of cycling deaths in over 6 years. 90% of these cyclist fatalities occur on streets with no protection for bikers. With NYC’s bike ridership steadily increasing as a result of the pandemic, it’s clear that we must expand and address the inadequacies in our bicycle infrastructure to keep cyclists safe and create a truly green transit infrastructure.
The Tube NYC, envisioned by environmental journalist Laurie Garrett, is a five-borough bike highway of protected lanes, built mostly from repurposing existing infrastructure like elevated subway tracks, and space under highways. Creating a citywide network of protected bike lanes, like The Tube, would increase ridership and decrease CO2 emissions, ensure cyclists a truly safe ride, and make cycling more accessible to communities currently without adequate bike lanes.
Change is urgently needed, and there’s no better time to do it. Eric Adams, New York's Democratic Nominee for Mayor, has promised to "find unused space such as road space under elevated highways and railways that can become bicycle superhighways”, as well as build 300 miles of bike lanes in his first 4 years. Also, President Biden’s infrastructure bill has passed, allotting $621 for improving transportation, with an emphasis on green alternatives.
To show NYC’s politicians how important biking is to our city, we need your help. Your signature will help us demonstrate that bike infrastructure is an important issue that needs to be addressed. Please sign the petition to help make our streets safer for New York bicyclists, and come to our rally at Brooklyn Borough Hall on October 23rd (10-2 PM)!!
