Eradicate hall culture at IIEST Shibpur
The Issue
I joined IIEST Shibpur with high hopes, eager to engage in a nurturing academic environment that would allow me to grow both intellectually and socially. However, the grim reality of hall culture has proven to be a significant barrier to my and many others' campus experience. Hall culture, with its deep-rooted tradition of ragging, undue pressures, and toxic competition, has overshadowed the core educational values and the true spirit of camaraderie we expected to find here.
This issue isn't just about discomfort but has real implications on mental health and academic performance. Many students, including myself, have experienced undue stress and anxiety, affecting our studies and overall well-being. According to a survey conducted among students at our institution, over 60% reported being subjected to some form of harassment or unfair practices due to hall culture norms. These practices instill a sense of fear rather than fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect.
The harmful effects of this culture extend beyond individual students. They tarnish the institution's reputation, sometimes leading to increased dropout rates and diminishing the quality of education provided. A study published by the Indian Journal of Educational Research highlights that institutions with prevalent hall cultures often see lower graduation rates and higher mental distress levels among their students.
It’s time IIEST Shibpur takes a strong stand to eradicate this toxic environment. We demand that the administration implements comprehensive anti-ragging policies backed by strict enforcement measures. Immediate steps should include setting up a 24/7 helpline for students to report incidents, organizing workshops on mutual respect and community building, and establishing a committee comprising students, faculty, and alumni to oversee the dismantling of toxic hall traditions.
