Get Actors to be Paid for all stages of the Auditioning Process
The Issue
Covid 19 has illuminated a lot of disparities, from healthcare, education and race. The pandemic has made it clear that only the privileged can afford to continue life as it was. For Actors, this pandemic has been extremely impactful. On one hand, there have been those who have auditioned more due to the wide-spread use of self-tapes that allows for a wider reach of actors. However, this has also meant that many of us Actors are spending hours self-taping for projects that we may never work on. Not just because of Covid but because its the nature of the beast. In 2020, in a space of 6 months, I had 20 auditions and on one spectacular day I had 3 that I handed in on that very same day as it was the last day before the holidays. As the new year arrived, it dawned on me that I spend on average 4 hours for each audition. The London minimum wage is £10.75 per hour. If I was to be paid this for each audition, then I worked out that in 2020 I would've been paid £860 just to audition. Now, this may seem like small change but for an actor, it can be the money needed for paying the electricity bill for the week. I propose that Producers pay actors a minimum fee depending on the budget of the project they're auditioning for.
