While credit monitoring can help detect fraud after the fact, a credit freeze can prevent the types of credit fraud the recent Equifax data breach enables. As such, Equifax should pay the fees for freezing credit at all three credit agencies for everyone affected by the data breach. Those who requested and already paid for freezes after the breach was announced should be reimbursed for the cost. Equifax should also pay any costs for unfreezing and re-freezing during the same window for which they are currently offering free credit monitoring.
