Equalize Car Insurance Rates for Young Male and Female Drivers

The Issue

There is a significant discrepancy in car insurance rates between young male and female drivers. Young males are often charged almost double the rate of their female counterparts, a practice that appears to be based on historical data of past incidents. This not only penalises responsible young male drivers but also creates an economic barrier that may lead some to drive without insurance due to unaffordability.

While it is true that statistically, young men have higher accident rates, this should not justify such a wide gap in pricing policies. We believe this approach unfairly discriminates against all young men based on the historical actions of a subset.

Insurance companies do offer Telematics, (BlackBox's) as a way of lowering the cost but they are often very restrictive, inaccurate and draconian. Breaches of the rules of these devices can lead to Insurance policy cancellations which would further prohibit a young driver from obtaining car insurance at a reasonable price.

My 17yr old son passed his Theory and Driving tests first time after lots of study and dedication. He has a 1L 2009 registration Peugeot car with an Insurance cost of over £2,000 per year (Almost the cost of the vehicle!!!). His female friends have more powerful cars with insurance at half the price. There is no evidence to show that his female friends are any better or worse drivers.

We urge insurance companies and regulatory bodies alike to review these practices and establish fairer pricing policies that do not discriminate based on gender but focus more on individual driving records and habits.

Please sign this petition if you agree with our cause for equal car insurance rates for all young drivers regardless of gender.
