Equalise UCAS points for apprenticeships with A-Levels

The Issue

I am currently completing an Apprenticeship and aiming to apply to university. However, I've encountered a significant obstacle: the discrepancy in UCAS points awarded for apprenticeships compared to A-Levels. To meet university entry requirements, I am compelled to undertake additional Higher Education courses on top of my apprenticeship commitments. This situation is both challenging and unfair, and it doesn't only affect me but countless others pursuing apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships are rigorous and demanding, providing practical experience, hands-on skills, and theoretical knowledge in specific fields. Despite this, the UCAS points attributed to apprenticeships often fall short of those awarded for A-Levels. This disparity not only undermines the value of apprenticeships but also hinders individuals in making seamless progress to university education.

Statistics from the Department for Education show that in recent years, over 700,000 students have participated in apprenticeships annually in the UK. These are individuals who are actively contributing to the economy while building their careers. Yet, when it comes to advancing to higher education, they face unnecessary barriers due to an outdated points system.

There should be an official review into how UCAS points are allocated, ensuring apprenticeships are recognised for their true value and importance. Universities and educational authorities must collaborate to develop a fairer system which acknowledges the hard work and dedication of apprentices.

Please sign this petition to urge the government and educational bodies to re-evaluate and equalise the UCAS points for apprenticeships, fostering a better future for all young professionals on different educational pathways. Your support can make a vital difference in creating a more equitable educational landscape.
