The Issue

We, the undersigned teachers of Assam, respectfully request the Government to bring parity in the Pay Band of Graduate Teachers (GT) and Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) serving in High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools under the Secondary Education Department.

At present, there is a huge and unfair pay gap between GTs and PGTs, even though both work under the same directorate, follow the same school timings, and contribute equally to the education system.

🔹 Our key points:

1. Same Directorate, Same School — but different Pay Band: Both GT and PGT work in the same institutions, yet their pay structures differ drastically.

2. Unjust salary gap: The difference in net pay between GT and PGT is nearly ₹18,000, while in most other states and the Central Government, this gap is only ₹4,000–₹5,000.

3. GTs perform higher duties: In many high schools, GTs are also taking classes for Class 11 and 12, handling academic and administrative work beyond their pay scale.

4. Same Pay Band as Upper Primary Assistant Teachers: Graduate Teachers receive the same Pay Band as Upper Primary Assistant Teachers, despite carrying greater responsibilities and higher qualifications. This is grossly unfair and demotivating.

5. Equal respect for equal work: Graduate Teachers possess graduate and often post-graduate qualifications, yet their pay does not reflect their contribution or expertise.

We, therefore, urge the Education Department and the Hon’ble Education Minister to kindly upgrade the Pay Band of Graduate Teachers to Pay Band-3 (₹22,000–97,000) same as that of Post Graduate Teachers to ensure equity, motivation, and justice for thousands of teachers across Assam.

Let’s end this discrimination — Equal Pay Band for Equal Work!
