Equal Opportunities for Indigenous Students in the Philippines

The Issue

Education is a right, not a privilege. Yet many indigenous students (Lumad, Aeta, Mangyan, Igorot, and others) in the Philippines face limited access to quality education. They often study in remote schools with little to no resources, lack proper facilities, and face discrimination that hinders their learning. Some are forced to walk long distances to reach classrooms, while others cannot afford school supplies or uniforms.

This inequality prevents indigenous youth from reaching their full potential and contributing meaningfully to society. Every Filipino student deserves the same chance to succeed—regardless of ethnicity, culture, or background.

Proposed Solution:

We call on the Department of Education (DepEd), local government units (LGUs), and private partners to:

  • Provide scholarships and financial aid programs for indigenous students.
  • Build or improve school facilities in indigenous communities.
  • Ensure cultural sensitivity and inclusion in school curricula.
  • Train teachers to address the unique needs of indigenous learners.
  • Partner with NGOs and community leaders to sustain programs for education access.

Why This Matters:

Education breaks the cycle of poverty and empowers indigenous communities to preserve their culture while engaging with the modern world. By supporting equal opportunities in education, we are not only helping indigenous students but also strengthening the nation’s future.

Call to Action:

We urge the Philippine Government, DepEd, and local authorities to prioritize inclusive education for indigenous students. Sign this petition to show your support for equality, fairness, and the right to education for all.

Together, we can build a Philippines where every child has an equal chance to learn, dream, and succeed.
