Equal industry representation on Creative Saskatchewan's Board of Directors
The Issue
Presently, Creative Saskatchewan's act and Governance Policies do not have guidelines in place ensuring equal representation of the six creative sectors the funding agency is mandated to support: Book Publishing, Craft & Visual Arts including Commercial Galleries, Digital Game Development, Live Performing Arts, Music, and Film & TV.
This has led to biased representation on Creative Saskatchewan's Board of Directors, heavily favouring the Film & TV sector over the five remaining sectors.
In addition to this, because there are no policies in place enforcing creative industry-specific representation in general, this has allowed eras to occur where the majority of the board is made up of corporate professionals who lack creative industry experience entirely. While finance, legal, and governance experience is valid and appreciated, the agency's core mission is economic development for the creative industries, not economic development in general, and creative industry representation is crucial.
Those who have signed this petition demand the following addition/amendment to Creative Saskatchewan's governance policy manual to ensure equitable representation of each creative sector, and majority representation of the creative industries vs. non-creative-industry professionals on the Board of Directors:
- A minimum six of eleven Board of Director positions must be filled by individuals with substantial creative industry experience. Arts governance and arts board experience alone does not constitute sufficient industry experience.
- A minimum of one Board of Director position must be filled by an individual from each of the six creative industries: Book Publishing, Craft & Visual Arts including Commercial Galleries, Digital Game Development, Live Performing Arts, Music, and Film & TV.
- A maximum of two representatives per industry is permitted.
