Equal Access to Dialysis: A Lifeline for Filipino Dialysis Patients in Need

The Issue

In the Philippines, the fight for accessible and affordable dialysis treatment is a growing concern. Numerous petitions and calls for action highlight the financial hardship faced by patients and their families, urging the government to intervene. Mention the increasing number of patients requiring dialysis, the cost involved, and how many patients are struggling to afford the treatment. Advocating a free dialysis for chronic kidney disease patients consequential to ensure appropriate access to medications that may save lives, avoid administrative burden on families and positively impact public health outcomes. Unfortunately, the substantial expenses linked to dialysis treatment can present major obstacles to obtaining care, making it difficult for patients to access the treatment they require.
In our country, chronic kidney disease stands as the 7th leading cause of death among Filipinos, according to the 2013 Philippine Renal Disease Registry (PRDR) annual report. It is a silent killer that affects even the young and active segments of our population.

Therefore, filing a petition for dialysis patients to have free access to healthcare is essential because dialysis is a life-saving treatment that must be done regularly, and many patients cannot afford its high costs. Without free access, CKD patients are forced to make impossible choices between their health and other basic necessities. The financial burden of dialysis can lead to worsening health outcomes if patients skip treatments due to cost. Public healthcare systems must support those with chronic conditions like kidney disease, ensuring equity and fairness. Our petition will raise awareness and urge the government to prioritize affordable healthcare for all citizens, particularly those most vulnerable.

As responsible and concerned citizens, we proposed plans to implement this petition.

  1. Promote Awareness to the Public: Our group will collaborate with NGO's that prioritize the needs of dialysis patients and give perception for the daily battles of CKD and ALD warriors. With the help of their constituents, we can easily raise this petition to the public and engage them to join in this petition.
  2. Urge Lawmakers to Establish a Bill: Through this petition, we can reach the government, especially lawmakers to appeal to establish a bill that allocates our resolution for free access to healthcare services eligible to all Filipinos who fight for their lives against chronic kidney disease and acute liver failure.
  3. Implement Substantial Programs: The government, with the cooperation of Department of Health, the PhilHealth, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development will initiate the local government units and barangays to implement programs such as monthly checkup drive for dialysis patients and provide healthcare assistance for every patient to aid for their necessities.

Patients with this disease currently receive not sufficient funding for healthcare, which puts their families in debt and forces many of them to skip out on critically important dialysis treatments. It is crucial that dialysis therapy be made available to all Filipinos suffering from kidney and liver illnesses, irrespective of their socioeconomic status. This action not only demonstrates our dedication to improving the lives of individuals who are dealing with this disease on a daily basis, but it also emphasizes healthcare as a fundamental right.

We must make our voices heard. We must get what we want. Please sign this petition to assist our fellow Filipinos in getting the medical attention they really deserve.
