Save the Western Ghats

Save the Western Ghats
The Issue
Oppose the construction of the Hubballi- Ankola railway line. Save our Western Ghats.
Home to an irreplaceable varieties of flora and fauna, older than the mighty Himalayas, housing around 33% of World’s biodiversity, the Western Ghats are an essential part of the Indian Peninsula. Running along the edge of the Deccan Plateau, these magical mountains are not only an ecological treasure that must be preserved, they are of primordial importance to life as we Southern Indians know it: they influence Indian monsoon weather patterns, and are important for the climatic equilibrium in this part of the country.
The plans drawn up to construct the railway line connecting Hubballi and Ankola unfortunately involves axing of over 2 lakhs trees on the mountain range. According to news sources, the scheme would endanger over 2500 endemic species of trees. (See the Scroll link below). This is a too large a number of trees that are being sacrificed for a railway line. This would undoubtedly and irrevocably change the ecosystem of the Western Ghats.
With the growing rise in temperature and with world governments entering the fray to battle Climate Change, such a large-scale deforestation seems both unnecessary and as a reckless risking of the ecological and climatic well being of the people of the peninsula. Moreover, in the coming decades, scientists predict that the Indian Subcontinent would hit temperatures akin to those of the Sahara. (See Guardian below). Keeping these factors in mind, we oppose this project. We want to preserve the Western Ghats and its natural wealth.
Say no to felling of trees. Say no to destroying our Western Ghats. Help us secure signatures to effectively show authorities that this must be stopped.
