The Issue

Cancer Alley is an 85 mile stretch along the Mississippi River, extending from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. The residents there have been subjected to environmental injustice by the Eastman Chemical Company. Many might ask why would people choose to live there, grow up there, or start families there. These residents are low income natives of their community where redlining is a force that is well known throughout a state such as Louisiana. The chemicals produced smoke plumes that smell of sulfur and are easily recognized as the smell of rotten eggs. Chemicals such as this make the residents a victim of miscarriages and dying of cancer. The injustice isn’t that people live there, it’s that underprivileged citizens blame the chemical plant, and rightly so. Please help us right this tremendous wrong and provide a safe environment for the residents of Cancer Alley.
