Ability to choose electricity providers

The Issue

The Entergy monopoly goes far beyond a normal power outage due to a hurricane.

-Yes, we realize there was a hurricane that caused damage.

Should energy be completely taken away from those who were not affected? Should customers have the RIGHT to choose their electricity provider?

YES.

Does your neighboring house have uninterrupted electricity meanwhile yours has been completely out for hours on end in the texas summer heat? Well, you’ll be lucky if it turns on soon. During hurricane IKE Entergy went through the same issues, electricity to Texans was out for days on end.

Entergy is a MONOPOLY. They don’t have to worry about your power being on, much less your rates. Because they’re the only thing YOU’VE GOT.

Curious as to why you can’t choose your provider?

In 1999, the Texas Legislature passed a deregulation law that made it possible for consumers in most parts of Texas to choose their own electric company. The new law was passed to encourage free market competition and lower prices. Some areas, such as municipalities and cooperatives, were not required to deregulate, so customers in those areas may not have electric choice

Does ALL of Montgomery county TX get to choose their electricity provider?

No. It depends on where you live. Some communities are served by municipalities, cooperatives, or investor-owned utilities, so electric choice is not available.

***MOST IMPORTANTLY:

According the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), munis and co-ops can choose to participate in deregulation at any time if there is a resolution adopted by their board of directors (co-ops) or the governing body (munis).

Petitioning for a resolution to:

-promote competition in the generation and retail sale of electricity through various means, including the limitation of market power;

-protect against unwarranted service disconnections, unauthorized changes in electric service, and deceptive or unfair practices;

-prohibit any granting of either monopolies or exclusive franchises for the generation and sale of electricity.

**if you were wondering, yes- entergy donates to campaign funds**

Entergy Louisiana’s 1.1 million residential customers paid less in 2018 for electricity than anyone else across the country.

Entergy, Louisiana’s only Fortune 500 company, stated that one reason residential rates are so low in Louisiana is because industrials share the costs with small businesses and homeowners and because of the economies that come with regulated monopolies (TEXAS).

In a deregulated market, if a consumer isn’t happy with their current services, they have the right to look elsewhere and switch supply services at any time.  As a result, the power in this type of market shifts. Electricity providers must develop different plans, pricing, products and be as appealing as possible to attract and keep their customers. In addition, it is in the electricity provider’s best interest to keep rates reasonable and fair. Otherwise, the consumer can and will take their services elsewhere.

Each company has a service territory authorized by the PUCT in which there are no competitors in the provision of wires and infrastructure that comprise the electricity grid. However, the two utilities differ in the actual provision of electricity to a customer. Entergy does not offer retail competition on its system and acquires and provides all power used on its system. CenterPoint provides the physical infrastructure of the power grid to move electricity to a customer, but the electricity must be contracted and bought from a third party seller, called a Retail Electric Provider, by the customer.

CenterPoint is a partially deregulated utility. The grid that CenterPoint uses for transmission and distribution of power is subject to PUCT rate regulation and the regulated cost provides one component of the customer’s bill for service. Marketers (Retail Electric Providers) of power on the CenterPoint system sell electricity at market competitive prices and are not regulated, but are certificated, by the commission. The market price of electricity is component of the customer’s bill.

Entergy is fully regulated by the PUCT for each service that it provides customers. There are no marketers of electricity for a customer of Entergy to choose from.
