Ensuring Safe and Functional Chairs and Desks for Every Student

Ensuring Safe and Functional Chairs and Desks for Every Student
The Issue
Students spend long hours in classrooms, yet many are required to sit on broken chairs and use damaged desks. Unstable seats, uneven surfaces, and poorly maintained furniture cause discomfort, distraction, and possible safety risks. According to the Department of Education, schools are responsible for maintaining facilities that support students’ safety and well-being, yet damaged classroom furniture remains a common issue.
Proper classroom furniture is essential to students’ health, posture, and ability to learn effectively. Studies show that poor seating and improper posture can lead to back pain, fatigue, and reduced concentration, which directly affect academic performance. A learning environment should support students, not hinder them.
While school administrators play a key role in addressing this concern, students can also help by:
- Using classroom furniture responsibly
- Promptly reporting damaged chairs and desks to teachers or advisers
- Participating in school programs such as Brigada Eskwela to help maintain classroom facilities
- Helping organize classroom spaces to prevent damage and clutter
- Encouraging classmates to treat furniture with care
We respectfully call on the school administration to inspect, repair, and replace broken classroom furniture. Ensuring safe, comfortable, and functional chairs and desks will create classrooms where students can learn with focus, dignity, and confidence.
