The Issue

Growing up, I have witnessed the struggles faced by my elderly grandparents due to their limited mobility, and my own temporary condition once left me unable to visit essential locations simply because there were no wheelchairs available. This personal experience opened my eyes to a widespread issue in our communities—public buildings, including libraries, museums, government offices, and hospitals, often lack readily accessible wheelchairs and easy processes for their use.

This oversight in public infrastructure results in countless elderly and disabled individuals missing out on important opportunities to participate in community life and take advantage of public services. According to the World Health Organization, out of the 1 billion individuals with disabilities globally, many encounter physical barriers like these every day that hinder full participation in society.

To address this, we urge the national and local governments to mandate the provision of wheelchairs in all public buildings. These wheelchairs must be easily accessible, and the process for obtaining and using one should be straightforward and well-publicized. Imagine a society where everyone, regardless of physical ability, has the freedom to explore museums, access public records, or attend civic meetings without unnecessary hurdles.

Here are practical steps that can pave the way for more inclusive public spaces:

1. **Inventory and Training:** Public buildings should conduct an inventory check to ensure an adequate number of wheelchairs are available. Staff must be trained to assist with wheelchair use and guide visitors.

2. **Clear Signage and Communication:** Signage should be prominent, and simple instructions should be displayed in multiple languages to guide visitors on how to access wheelchairs. Online information about wheelchair availability should be updated regularly.

3. **Community Engagement:** Engage with local disability advocacy groups to better understand the needs and involve them in the planning and implementation of these services.

By signing this petition, you join a movement that believes in equal access for all. Together, we can influence policy changes that ensure public buildings truly serve the whole community, and provide an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Let’s create a future where no one is left behind, isolated by avoidable limitations.

Please sign this petition to make public spaces genuinely accessible for everyone.
