Ensure warnings for animal abuse in films and television

The Issue

So, I've just come back from the cinema after watching the latest Jason Statham action film, Shelter. As soon as the film started and I saw his dog, my heart sank! Realistically I knew that the dog was not getting off that island and sure enough he didn't. I know it's not real, I know the dog was not harmed in real life, but I would never choose to view that content willingly. To this day I have never watched Marley and Me, because I've lived that pain, that loss in real life, and I do not choose to put myself through it for entertainment purposes.

As someone who holds immense empathy for animals, it is deeply distressing to unexpectedly encounter scenes of animal abuse or death in films and television programmes. Many like me find it emotionally overwhelming to witness such depictions without prior warning. This is why it is crucial to have clear and conspicuous warnings placed at the beginning of any film or television programme that portrays animal cruelty or death.

There is a growing awareness about the importance of mental health and emotional well-being, and audiences are increasingly seeking to make informed viewing choices. Just as content warnings alert viewers to scenes of violence, sexual content, or sensitive themes, specific warnings for animal abuse or death are equally necessary.

According to a 2022 survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, 63% of viewers reported experiencing anxiety or distress when faced with unexpected traumatic content. While various streaming platforms and networks have introduced violence and trigger warnings, there is still a gap when it comes to the explicit portrayal of harm to animals.

Implementing these warnings will allow viewers to make conscious decisions about their media consumption and protect the emotional well-being of those who feel a deep connection and compassion towards animals. These warnings would be especially beneficial for individuals with past trauma related to animals, providing them the choice to avoid distressing content.

We urge television networks, film producers, and streaming services to take action by including clear warnings about animal abuse or death in their content. This simple yet effective measure will cater to viewers' diverse sensitivities and foster a more ethical media environment.

Sign this petition to advocate for this vital change that respects our emotional and mental well-being as viewers and affirms our compassion towards animals.
