Yet, most domestic violence shelters in Virginia do not accept pets, leaving victims of abuse to make the heartbreaking decision between personal safety and the well-being of their beloved companions.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters reported that their abuser had threatened, injured, or killed family pets. This statistic illuminates the vital importance of not leaving pets behind when seeking safety. Furthermore, a survey by the Urban Resource Institute and the National Domestic Violence Hotline found that 50% of victims delay leaving an abusive situation because they cannot bring their pets with them.
There is clear evidence demonstrating the need for more inclusive safe havens that accommodate women, children, and their pets. It's time for Virginia to lead the way by providing support to all members of domestic violence-affected families.
