I am a Grandmother of a young woman, living the typical student life, but there's a particular challenge that she faces due to her school policy. Like any other female, she has her monthly cycle which she has no control over, forcing her to make frequent trips to the bathroom. In addition, she drinks water throughout the day to stay hydrated and healthy, but this also determines how often she needs to visit the bathroom. However, as per the current educational institutional regulations, students are limited to the number of times they can use the bathroom. This is inconvenient and in many cases, physically stressful for students like her. Several other students across the country encounter similar problems due to such unnecessary restrictions. According to a study by Pediatrics, the Journal of American Pediatrics Association, restricting bathroom access in schools can lead to health issues such as urinary tract infections, constipation, and abdominal pain among students. Therefore, we call upon our school administrators and the Department of Education to reevaluate these rules and ensure unlimited bathroom access to safeguard the well-being and dignity of the students.
