The Issue

We, the residents and concerned members of the Wilmington community, urge the City of Wilmington to prioritize snow and ice removal on McDowell Street.

This street remained unplowed for 4 days following the storm of 1/24/2026-1/25/2026, creating hazardous conditions for residents, visitors, and emergency services. This issue has been brought to Constituent Services numerous times, yet timely action was not taken until 1/29/2026. Prompt and consistent snow removal is essential to ensure public safety and accessibility.

Under the City of Wilmington Home Rule Charter, Section 5-400(c), the Department of Public Works “shall itself, or when specifically authorized by the council, by contract, clean and sand city streets; remove and dispose of ashes, garbage and refuse; remove and dispose of ice and snow from city streets.”

We respectfully request that the City of Wilmington take immediate steps to:

  • Plow and clear McDowell Street after snow events in a timely manner.
  • Implement a consistent snow removal plan for all residential streets, including dead-end roads.
