The Issue

As a gay man who runs an LGBTQIA+ community outreach program, I understand firsthand the importance of accessible resources for our community. Libraries have long been bastions of knowledge, inclusivity, and forward-thinking. Yet, there is a troubling trend where LGBTQIA+ literature is being relocated or restricted, driven by prejudice rather than the well-established Dewey Decimal System.

In many communities, libraries serve as a safe haven for individuals seeking to understand their identity and find representation in literature. The Dewey Decimal System was designed to organize and categorize books based on subject matter, ensuring that readers can find what they need efficiently and effectively. It was not intended to act as a tool for moving books to inaccessible or less visible areas due to bigotry.

For decades, LGBTQIA+ literature has been housed in specific sections where it belongs according to the Dewey Decimal classification. It is crucial that we preserve these designations, keeping these books in places where they are accessible to those in need. To relegate them to separate or hidden sections of the library compromises the ability of young readers, educators, and allies to access essential literature.

Statistics from the American Library Association show a rise in challenges to books related to LGBTQIA+ themes. Such movements undermine the core mission of libraries: to provide equitable access to information for all. When these resources are subject to relocation based on bias, it not only disrupts a system that has been in place for over a century but also sends a damaging message to our community.

We propose that libraries across the country reaffirm their commitment to inclusion by ensuring that all literature — including LGBTQIA+ books — remain in their designated spots according to the Dewey Decimal System. Librarians and library boards should adopt policies that protect against biased relocation of such important resources.

Now, more than ever, the presence of LGBTQIA+ literature in its rightful place is vital for community support, education, and representation. Join us in urging libraries to uphold the integrity and accessibility of their collections.

Please sign this petition to protect LGBTQIA+ literature in libraries and ensure that these invaluable resources continue to be available to everyone, without prejudice or restriction.
