Ensure that a public inquiry is done into BC Prosecution and hold them accountable
The Issue
We require a public inquiry into the BC Prosecution Service. Currently, there is no complaint process for criminal prosecutors in British Columbia who work for the BC Prosecution Service. A formal complaint system is necessary for the BC Prosecution Service, which is essentially funded by the citizens of British Columbia through their taxes. Racism directed at first-time offender minority men by white women prosecutors and women run administrative crown counsel must also be stopped. There is currently no accountability for the BC Prosecution Service, and virtually no recourse for their actions. An independent third party is needed to investigate the BC Prosecution Service and its prosecutors to hold them accountable for their actions. The BC Prosecution Service is silently terrorizing BC citizens who have sometimes made minor mistakes or, in some cases, done virtually nothing at all but have been accused of a crime by someone seeking revenge or who dislikes them; These are first time offenders with no prior criminal records. This creates a workload for the BC Prosecution Service, which keeps them employed and our tax dollars flowing into the bank accounts of BC prosecutors. They prosecute the people who pay their salaries—how ironic. This is intensifying mental health and drug addiction issues, further straining an already overloaded healthcare system. And there is currently absolutely nothing the people can do if they are unhappy with the BC Prosecution Service - we want to change that with this petition.
Make BC Prosecution service prosecutor more diverse to be more reflective of the citizens it citizens. BC Prosecutions employs close to 400 prosecutors who prosecute people who they have reason to believe may have committed a crime. Currently, its staff is composed of over 90% white individuals, which does not reflect BC’s diverse community. Despite the assignment of a minority prosecutor to the case, a white prosecutor is exerting pressure on them to seek the maximum penalties against the accused. This is creating further biases to already marginalized communities. We are asking the Government of Canada and BC Government to make BC Prosecution service more diverse so marginalized individuals are not facing systemic racism in one of the most important fights of their life with the criminal justice system. Facing racism by the BC Prosecution Service can have devastating consequences on innocent people who feel hopeless in a criminal court system operated by white individuals. Men are also facing significant biases. Majority of men accused of crimes are being punished by white women prosecutors. Many individuals from minority groups often feel pressured to plead guilty to crimes they didn't commit because they can't afford a trial or want to avoid the stress of a lengthy legal process. There have been documented cases at the North Vancouver and Richmond Crown counsel offices, both led by white women administrative counsel. Lawyers, too, feel powerless in dealing with the BC Prosecution Service. BC judges almost always side with the Crown's recommendations, even when the defence lawyer argues for a lesser penalty. If you're a minority man, you will unfortunately face the harshest penalties in BC. Let’s come together to put an end to this borderline corruption and prevent them from pursuing a conviction at any cost. Please help take a stand against the BC Prosecution service.
