Ensure stricter protections for rape survivors in the UK
The Issue
My journey through the justice system has been a harrowing one—a deeply personal battle that, unfortunately, many others share. As a survivor of rape, I navigated a system that seemed more concerned with the rights and privileges of my offender than with ensuring my own safety and peace of mind.
The existing system allows offenders to be placed in Category D prisons which offer freedoms such as earned unsupervised visits and overnight stays in the community. The safety survivors hope for are replaced by the unnerving truth that they could unwittingly cross paths with their assailant.
Moreover, exclusion zones are small areas put in place to restrict the offender going near the victim, this isolates the victim into one small area.
This needs to change. We must advocate for legislative amendments that ensure that rape survivors are prioritized in the justice system. Firstly, offenders should be restricted with stringent restriction zones, not the victims. It should be their burden to avoid the survivor, ensuring survivors can live freely without fear.
Additionally, rape offenders should be excluded from Category D prison placements. These institutions are inappropriately lenient for such serious crimes and offer little justice to those who live with the trauma inflicted upon them. Victims also deserve to be informed about where their offenders are so they can consciously avoid potentially harmful encounters. Such transparency is the least the justice system can do to protect and empower those who have endured the unimaginable.
The current practices are not just outdated but dangerously negligent. Let's rally together to push for reforms that re-center the focus of the justice system on the survivors, ensuring their safety and dignity are upheld above all else.
I urge those with power to reevaluate these policies, consult with survivors, legal experts, and advocacy groups to implement changes that reflect the seriousness with which these crimes should be treated.
