In light of the recent tragic event that took place in downtown Owen Sound, where local business owner Sharif Rahman was assaulted and later pronounced deceased, it is imperative for the city of Owen Sound to prioritize the safety of its residents and visitors. We believe that installing cameras throughout the entire downtown core is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.

As a concerned citizen of Owen Sound, I was deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Rahman's untimely passing. His assault highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures in our community. By placing cameras strategically throughout our downtown area, we can deter criminal activities, provide valuable evidence for investigations, and ultimately ensure a safer environment for everyone.

The incident involving Mr. Rahman occurred on August 17th at approximately 9:15 p.m., near his restaurant on a busy sidewalk area. Unfortunately, due to limited surveillance coverage in that specific location, only blurry images were available to aid law enforcement in their investigation.

To prevent such tragic incidents from happening again and to assist law enforcement agencies effectively, we propose equipping our downtown core with surveillance cameras capable of capturing clear footage. These cameras would cover key areas such as sidewalks, parking lots, public spaces, and entrances/exits to businesses.

Installing these cameras will not only act as a deterrent against potential criminal activities but also provide invaluable evidence when incidents do occur. This will greatly assist law enforcement agencies in identifying perpetrators swiftly and bringing them to justice.

Moreover, having comprehensive camera coverage will enhance overall safety within our community by fostering an environment where criminals are less likely to target individuals or establishments due to increased risk of being caught on tape.

We understand that implementing such measures may require financial resources; however, we firmly believe that investing in public safety should be one of our top priorities as responsible citizens. By allocating funds towards this initiative now rather than later when more lives may be at stake, we can proactively safeguard the well-being of business owners, workers, patrons, and tourists in Owen Sound.

In conclusion, we urge the city of Owen Sound to take immediate action and install cameras throughout the entire downtown core.
