Ensure Safety by Decommissioning the Mullaperiyar Dam Now
The Issue
I write this petition with great anguish, utmost disappointment and agony. Our livelihood, and the lives of lakhs of people are threatened by the unstable state of the Mullaperiyar Dam which consist of 15 TMC water spreading over 4668 Acres of land. This issue is deeply personal to me, as I understand the impact it could have on our lives if an unexpected catastrophe strikes.
The Mullaperiyar Dam, constructed in 1895, has exceeded its estimated lifespan of 50 years. Its deteriorating condition now poses a major threat to a lot of people, in the event of a dam-break scenario. Along with the potential loss of life, such an event could lead to disastrous consequences like displacement and prolonged economic instability (National Institute of Disaster Management).
This is a case of ecological, economical, human disaster. Not only human, the entire flora and fauna is to perish in the part of the World if the dam is to continue without any move to rectify the risks involved.
Due to the disaster waiting in the wings more than a lakh of people between the dam and the Idukki reservoir 40km below the dam, more than 40 lakhs of people in the lower reaches of Periyar, Azhutha, Meenachilar, Pamba and Manimalayar rivers spreading over 5 districts will be drowned causing not only loss of millions of lives of human and animal population but also precious housing properties and agriculture fields.
This dam was constructed using Lime Surkhi concrete which is 6 times inferior than the present M30 concrete used for construction. Already a good portion of lime has been washed away. There are innumerable potholes, crevices and other openings that are visible on the surface of the Dam.
The International Commission on Large Dams and the Central Water Commission have highlighted safety concerns related to Mullaperiyar Dam. However, despite repeated warnings, adequate action has not been taken.
It's our collective responsibility to protect our people and our land. By decommissioning the Mullaperiyar Dam, authorities can mitigate this impending risk and plan for a safer, more sustainable solution for water management in the area.
The clock is ticking, and it's high time to act. Don't let us wake up one day to a calamity that we could have prevented. We should raise our voice when we have a voice. You can be an integral part if things go our way.
We are not at all near in recovering from Wayanad Landslide. In this case, It's not a small region which is going to be affected, it's going to be you, me, them; "ALL OF US". I'm pleading you all to sign this petition and save millions of people from yet another tragic, dreadful calamity and have the respected authorities to look into this matter.
Thank you.
