The Issue

Children have the RIGHT to safety in school zones - it is our RESPONSIBILITY to ensure they remain safe.

Every day, countless children across our country head to school facing unnecessary risks in school zones. These areas, meant to be safe havens for our young ones, have increasingly become sites of danger due to speeding vehicles, poor traffic signage, and insufficient monitoring. We need to make the safety and security of children in school zones a priority.

Recent reports indicate a concerning trend: the number of traffic-related incidents near schools has risen sharply in the past few years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian injuries in school zones have increased by 10% since 2018. With children being the most vulnerable pedestrians, it is crucial to address this issue urgently.

What Can Improve?

  • Bright, Visible School Zone Signage: One actionable solution is to enhance the visibility and effectiveness of school zone signage. Bright, clear signs that alert drivers to slow down around schools can reduce accidents significantly.
  • Speed Deterrents: Implementing speed bumps and increasing the presence of crossing guards and traffic police during school hours can mitigate the risk of accidents.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating drivers on the importance of adhering to speed limits and being vigilant in school zones is critical. Public awareness campaigns can drive change by educating drivers on the importance of adhering to speed limits and being vigilant in school zones, helping to prioritize the safety of children.
  • Improving School Zone Infrastructure: Improvement and regular maintenance of school zone infrastructure, including better lighting, pedestrian crossings, and flashing lights that activate during school start and end times improve school zone safety significantly.

What Can I Do?

Children deserve a safe path to education, free from the fear of accidents. By signing this petition, you are showing your support for authorities to adopt stricter safety measures in school zones, specifically ensuring adequate signage, crosswalks in safe and visible locations, and improving lighting in school zones. Furthermore, this petition will help demonstrate the community's support of returning the crosswalk to its original location on NW 21st Ave, which would provide a safer crossing location for students attending Chinook Elementary, Alki Middle, and Skyview High Schools.

This petition was created specifically with the Vancouver School District in mind, however these concerns are applicable across the nation.  Together, we can create a safer, more secure environment for our children, ensuring that their journey to and from school is one of learning, not fear.
