Ensure Safety and Confidence for LGBTQIA+ Youth in Conservative Towns

The issue

My story began in Terang VIC, Australia - a quaint, conservative town where I grew up. I was a teenager, grappling with understanding myself and my sexuality; I was a closeted queer kid anxiously guarding my truth. Summoning the courage, I revealed my first same-sex relationship, faced with an overwhelming fear of rejection and judgement.

Our town prides itself on its strong sense of community and unity, yet, it's been observed that for those who identify as LGBTQIA+, this sense of belonging can feel compromised, leading to feelings of isolation and fear. Unfortunately, this is not unique to Terang - in a recent study by La Trobe University, it was noted that 75% of Australian same-sex attracted young people have experienced some form of homophobic abuse or bullying. The stories are heart-wrenching, and the need for change is urgent.

It's time to rewrite this narrative. Our petition aims to foster an environment where LGBTQIA+ children in conservative towns can feel safe and confident in expressing their true selves. We must advocate for an inclusive culture, providing education and resources to all residents, breaking down the walls of ignorance and unhelpful stereotypes. This is not a task for a select few but a responsibility for our community as a whole.

We call upon local government and community leaders to champion LGBTQIA+ inclusion and safety, driving cultural change and nurturing inclusive understanding. For every young person questioning their place in the world, for every child scared to reveal their truth - support this change. We are all a part of the society fabric, and together, we can weave an accepting, unified community that will empower the children growing up in it.

Please sign this petition for a safer and more inclusive Terang VIC, Australia, for our LGBTQIA+ youth.
