For those of us who have struggled with drug use, the chance to have a safe space to consume substances can be the difference between life and death. Our current system in the city is failing those in need by removing critical locations and reducing the staff that advocates for and supports vulnerable drug users. Without these facilities, we are forced onto the streets, bringing not only risk to ourselves but also the community, exposing children and families to situations they should never have to encounter.

Many cities have seen a reduction in supervised consumption sites, and the impact has been devastating. These safe spaces are not merely locations where drug use happens; they are places where users feel humanized, supported, and respected. Research from institutions like the American Journal of Preventive Medicine highlights that areas with supervised drug consumption see decreases in overdose rates and the spread of infectious diseases. These facilities provide trained staff who not only monitor usage to prevent overdose but also offer resources for rehabilitation and recovery.

We propose that the city government collaborate with existing community health organizations to reopen and establish more indoor safe consumption spaces. Ensuring these spaces are not just open, but accessible, adequately staffed, and equipped with the necessary resources can prevent unnecessary deaths and reduce the incidents involving public drug use. It's important these locations are discreetly placed, to maintain privacy for users while minimizing visibility to the general public, thus addressing concerns about exposure to children and families.

This isn't solely about substance use; it's about dignity and respect for every member of our community. We all deserve a second chance and the support needed to find our way to recovery. Let us take actionable steps towards a safer, more compassionate city.
