The issue
My ex-partner is currently incarcerated for violating multiple AVOs and breaking into my home twice with a knife in hand. The police intervened just in time, preventing what could have been another tragic act of violence. But after years of abuse and stalking, there is still no safe housing available for me. I live in constant fear, not knowing when he will be released and when my safety will be compromised again. Like many women in New South Wales enduring domestic violence, all the refuge centers are full, leaving us with nowhere safe to go. The government's inaction speaks strongly that women's lives and safety seem secondary, or even less.
Domestic violence is a grave issue that affects thousands of women across the country. Statistics show that one in six women experience physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner. In NSW alone, there are thousands of reports of DV incidents every year, and the demand for safe housing surpasses available resources.
This is a pressing plea to the NSW Government: immediate and substantial investment is required in emergency housing for women fleeing violence. Women need safe spaces where they can rebuild their lives without living in fear of their abuser. To tackle this serious issue, existing shelters need expansion, and new facilities must be established urgently.
Moreover, the government should implement policies that provide safe, affordable, and accessible housing options for women who have escaped violent relationships but are not yet ready to face the housing market unassisted.
Please help amplify this call by signing this petition. Every signature sends a message that the community stands firm against domestic violence, urging the government to prioritize the safety and well-being of women. We can make a profound difference by demanding action from those in power. Sign this petition and join the fight for secure emergency housing for women in NSW.
