The Issue

My friend Wanda Faye Harrris, who was a mother, grand mother , great grandmother, sister, auntie and beloved friend to many, at age 69,tragically lost her life while crossing the railroad tracks in Wauwautosa, Wisconsin. She was trying to shorten the distance between the bus stop and her senior residence. She did this instead of making the long walk around the tracks. This dangerous shortcut has claimed lives, and it’s imperative that we act now to prevent further tragedies.

Residents of the Regent and Oxford Apartments frequently face this hazardous crossing in their daily commute. The gap between the bus stop and their homes forces many to make risky choices. The absence of a safe, convenient alternative is a pressing issue that urgently needs addressing.

Statistics from the Federal Railroad Administration reveal that pedestrian railroad crossing accidents are more common than many realize. In fact, in Wisconsin alone, there have been numerous fatalities and injuries over recent years, illustrating the need for safer crossing solutions.

We propose the construction of a pedestrian bridge or the institution of designated safe walking paths that connect the bus stop directly to the Regent and Oxford Apartments. Such infrastructure not only saves lives but also enhances the community's access and mobility.

Residents deserve a secure way to reach their homes without the fear of another loved one becoming a statistic. This requires immediate action from Wauwatosa city planners and local authorities.

Let’s save lives and foster a safer neighborhood by implementing a viable alternative to crossing these dangerous railroad tracks. Sign this petition to urge local authorities to prioritize the safety of the Regent and Oxford community.
