Ensure proper training and regulation in dog grooming industry

The Issue

The dog grooming industry has grown rapidly in recent years, but with that growth has come significant variation in standards and practices. At present there are no local or universally enforced regulations governing hygiene, training, or operational standards across grooming businesses. This inconsistency can pose risks to both animal welfare and client confidence.

Hygiene and  cleanliness are essential in any environment where animals are cared for. Without clear, enforceable standards, cleaning routines and salon conditions can vary widely.

Establishing consistent expectations for sanitation-such as routine cleaning schedules and appropriate workspace maintenance-would help ensure a safe and healthy environment for pets and professionals alike.

Training is another key Concern. The increasing availability of online-only courses means that some individuals may enter the profession without sufficient hands on experience. Dog grooming requires practical skills, animal handling knowledge, and an understanding of health and safety practices. Introducing minimum training requirements, including supervised, in-person experience, would help safeguard animal welfare and support professional competence across the industry.

In addition, clearer expectations around insurance and workplace setup are needed. groomers should be appropriately insured to protect both themselves and their clients in the event of accidents. Workspaces should also meet basic safety and hygiene standards, including appropriate seperation between grooming areas and food preparation space.

By introducing consistent regulations around training, hygiene, and insurance, the dog grooming industry can better protect animal welfare, support professionals, and build greater trust with the public.

Call to Action

We are calling for the introduction of standardized regulations within the dog grooming industry, including:

  • Minimum training requirements with practical experience
  • Clear hygiene and sanitation standards
  • Mandatory appropriate insurance coverage.

Together, these changes can help create a safer, more professional, and consistent environment for pets, groomers and clients.
