The Issue

On January 7, 2025, 19-year-old Peter Swenson was charged in a tragic DUI crash in Oak Lawn, Illinois. This reckless decision took the life of 27-year-old Eglin Manuel Castro Alvarez, a father, and left his 7-year-old daughter with devastating spinal and internal injuries. She will carry the pain of this trauma for the rest of her life.

Despite the severity of this crime, Swenson was released on bail with conditions. We believe this is not justice. When people who commit such violent and selfish acts are released quickly, it sends the message that lives lost do not matter — and it increases the risk that they or others will repeat these offenses.

Drunk driving is never “just a mistake.” It is a choice. A choice to drink, a choice to get behind the wheel, and in this case, a choice that killed a father and forever altered a little girl’s life. This behavior shows a lack of empathy, responsibility, and basic respect for human life.

Allowing someone who has shown such disregard for life to walk free while awaiting trial does not protect the community. Wealth, privilege, or status should not determine whether someone faces consequences. Justice must be equal, and accountability must be real.

We call on the Cook County State’s Attorney and Illinois judicial system to ensure that Peter Swenson faces the full consequences under Illinois law for his actions — without reduced charges, without special treatment, and without leniency because of financial privilege.

Eglin Manuel Castro Alvarez deserved better. His daughter deserves better. Our communities deserve better.
