Ensure Open, Clean, and Functional Bathrooms at Herbert Von King Park

The Issue

Herbert Von King Park is a vital and beloved community space that serves the residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant and surrounding neighborhoods. It is a place where residents can exercise, relax, and build community. It has become a second home to many of our children, who spend their days playing and exploring there. Unfortunately, the bathrooms at Herbert Von King Park are frequently found to be unsanitary, non-functional, or closed, which creates a stressful and inconvenient experience for our families and all park visitors. Ensuring that these facilities are well-maintained and available daily will significantly improve the park experience for everyone.

We, the undersigned, petition for the following actions to be taken to improve the condition and availability of the bathrooms at Herbert Von King Park:

 1.   Daily Opening Hours: Ensure that the bathrooms at Herbert Von King Park are open every day during park hours to provide necessary facilities for all park visitors, including children, their caregivers, and elderly residents.

 2.   Regular Cleaning and Maintenance: Implement a consistent cleaning schedule to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards. Regular maintenance should be performed to ensure all facilities are in good working condition.

 3.   Timely Repairs: Any issues such as broken fixtures, clogged toilets, or lack of supplies should be addressed and repaired within 24 hours of being reported.

 4.   Smoke-Free Environment: Implement and enforce a strict no-smoking policy in the bathrooms, including conducting regular checks and ensuring that park staff are trained to address and report smoking violations.

Council Member Chi Ossé, we urge you, as our representative, to advocate for these necessary improvements and work with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation to ensure that Herbert Von King Park remains a welcoming and well-maintained space for all.
