Ensure NHS records include children's disabilities

Ensure NHS records include children's disabilities
The Issue
Every time I take my son somewhere and he won’t talk, I have to explain he's autistic and selectively mute. It’s frustrating when doctors speak rudely to my son, who can’t talk at that moment, because I have to repeatedly explain his condition. Why aren’t these vital details on his records at every NHS establishment when they're happy to share my mobile number, address, and other personal information?
It's time to make a change for families like mine and countless others. Autistic children, along with those who have other disabilities, and their families face enormous challenges when healthcare professionals are unaware of their specific needs. An integrated system across all NHS establishments that clearly records these conditions would not only prevent misunderstandings but also promote a more respectful and understanding healthcare environment.
Ensuring that all NHS staff who have contact with children are trained in autism awareness is essential. A 2019 report by the National Autistic Society found that only 23% of people with autism in the UK believe they get the support they need from healthcare professionals. Training will empower NHS staff with the skills necessary to provide better care and support to autistic individuals and their families.
The introduction of a system where disabilities are recorded and easily accessible on NHS records will alleviate the emotional strain on families. This will also encourage a more inclusive and respectful communication environment during medical appointments.
It's critical that we push for better transparency and training within our NHS system to support children with autism and other disabilities. With your support, we can urge healthcare authorities to adapt these changes. Please sign this petition to advocate for a more inclusive and understanding NHS, ensuring that all staff are aware of children's disabilities and trained to provide the best possible care.
