Ensure inclusivity in the Australian Association of Peer Workers

Ensure inclusivity in the Australian Association of Peer Workers
The issue
Working as an Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) peer worker at St Vincent’s Hospital, I am constantly reminded that peer work does not exist in silos. My job and my life experiences encompass a tapestry of challenges, from mental health struggles to homelessness. Like many, my experiences do not fit neatly into one category.
This multifaceted reality is echoed by so many others, who like me, juggle intersecting experiences involving mental health, substance use, trauma, justice involvement, and family violence. Despite these diverse experiences, our peer workforces collectively embody the true spirit of understanding and empathy in ways unmatched by traditional frameworks.
Yet, the Australian Association of Peer Workers has not fully embraced this diversity. Our national representative body needs to be inclusive of all peer workers and encapsulate all lived and living experience sectors. Representation matters deeply, and having all voices at the table ensures a richer, more comprehensive approach that truly resonates with the realities of our work.
Excluding any sector or workforce from representation undermines the efforts made every day to foster inclusivity, healing, and support for all Australians who depend on our understanding, shared experiences, and dedication. The value we bring to the table is immeasurable, and it is crucial that our national representative body mirrors this diversity.
By advocating for a more inclusive, representative body, we can strive toward a future that values every peer worker’s contribution and ensures our voices and unique experiences lead to actionable solutions. Let us unite and reform the Australian Association of Peer Workers to reflect the true, diverse spectrum of our communities.
Sign this petition to insist on change for inclusivity, diversity, and representation in the Australian Association of Peer Workers.
