Ensure housing stability for families with disabled children
Ensure housing stability for families with disabled children
The Issue
My name is [Istar ], and I am a mother of five boys, two of whom have special needs. For seven long years, our family endured the hardship and trauma of homelessness. We were constantly relocating, every move bringing a new wave of emotional turmoil. It took a toll on all of us, especially on my children, who need stability and a secure environment to thrive in.
No family, particularly those with disabled children, should have to endure the fear and uncertainty of not having a place to call home. The challenges of caring for children with special needs are immense and housing insecurity only exacerbates these challenges. These children require a consistent routine and environment to support their development. Yet, thousands of families across our country face instability and homelessness, putting their children's well-being at risk.
Not only does homelessness impact the physical and emotional health of these children, it also affects their education. Studies have shown that children experiencing homelessness are more likely to face developmental delays, struggle academically, and miss school days. A stable home is essential to provide them the opportunity to succeed.
We urge local government officials and housing authorities to implement policies that prioritize housing stability for families with disabled children. By increasing affordable housing options and offering targeted support for families at risk, we can prevent these vulnerable families from falling into homelessness.
We call for the establishment of emergency housing support and a comprehensive safety net that addresses the unique needs of families with disabled children. This includes protection from eviction and resources for family support services.
I believe in a community where all families, regardless of their situation, have the dignity of a home. I ask you to stand with me in advocating for change by signing this petition. Let's ensure no family has to suffer the trauma and instability that we did. Together, we can make a difference.
